Position: Dean Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
Reports to: Vice Chancellor
Duty Station: Victoria University, Kampala
Working time: Full time
Length of appointment: ASAP with 6 months’ probation period

Purpose of job

To supervise, teach, promote research studies, disseminate research findings, and participate in Community Service.

Key functions

a) Prepare well-researched lectures and delivering them to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
b) Set tests, examinations and course work in accordance with University policy and regulations.
c) Administer and invigilate tests and examinations according to University policy and regulations.
d) Mark tests, course works and examination scripts, compiling and grading examination results in accordance with University policy and regulations.
e) Guide and advice students on their academic findings through conferences, seminars and publications.
f) Supervise undergraduate and post graduate students undertaking research projects.
g) Conduct seminars and tutorials.
h) Mentor lecturers and Assistant Lecturer.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

a) Have a PhD degree in specific Faculty based area specialization from a recognized University.
b) Should have at least five years of teaching experience at any level in institution of higher level.
c) Should have at least two (2) internationally recognized peer reviewed publications in the field of specialization.
d) Be an active leader who possesses entrepreneurial spirit and managerial excellence regarding all aspects of University operations including selection and retention of faculty and staff for institutional development and student services
e) Have a proven track record of research and publications in peer reviewed journals and/or monographs and books
f) Academic and Senior Administrative Managerial Experience of at least Five years.
g) Be a highly motivated visionary academic leader with extensive professional experience of strategic planning, building partnerships and leading academic operations at departmental or faculty level.

Job Title: Personal Assistant to Vice Chancellor (1 Position)

Length of appointment: ASAP with 6 month probation period
Age: At least 30 years and above.

Performs all duties of an administrative nature, including taking dictation, transcription, typing, setting up appointments, receiving and screening calls, preparing correspondence and memoranda, and maintaining file of all university activities and statistical data.

Duties and responsibilities:

a) Handle the VC’s agenda: organize daily tasks, schedule, arrange, coordinate and prepare the meetings, including daily planning of duties and responsibilities is of an organized nature of self and VC.
b) Set the tone of the office of professionalism in terms of workflow, appearance of office, appearance of employees and how one another interacts as a team and towards employees.
c) Be proactive in identifying priorities, emergencies and important issues in connection with the day-to-day business needs.
d) Handle all incoming and outgoing emails, correspondence and telephone calls and ensure that it is translated properly.
e) Take minutes and type memos, letters and emails, and ensure its correct archive.
f) Ensure the organization of all administrative filling and referencing procedures.

Qualification, Skills and Experience:

  • A master’s degree from an internationally recognized university is required.
  • Five years of progressively responsible professional experience of secretarial / administrative role.
  • Marketing and communication background is an advantage.
  • Excellent skills with computer productivity tools.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Fluent in the English language
  • Good time management skills.
  • Able to build trust and consensus.

Job Title: IT Officer (1 Position)

Reports to: University Registrar
Working time: Full time
Length of appointment: ASAP with 6 month probation period
Age: At least 25 years and above

Purpose of the job

IT Officer monitors and maintains the computer systems and networks of VU. S/He may install and configure computer systems, diagnose hardware and software faults and solve technical and applications problems, either over the phone or in person. It's therefore crucial to ensure the correct running and maintenance of the IT systems.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for ICT related duties, Management Information systems and Partnerships.
Create and manage VU website on daily basis
Advise on purchase and carry out maintenance of VU ICT appliances and systems
Arrange and maintenance of partnerships
Create and maintain VU Information System and records data base in liaison with the University MIS
Advise the University Registrar on Schedules and proper follow of project activities

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The candidate should possess a Postgraduate qualification in ICT – related fields
  • Sound technical knowledge about IT, security of systems and latest developments in the field
  • Excellent management, organization and time management skills
  • Demonstrate leadership and management ICT teams
  • Effective communication
  • Awareness of new technologies and implications of adopting the technologies in Higher Education

Past exposure and experience in education institution will be an added advantage

  • Knowledge of Learning Management Systems
  • Three years of relevant experience in management of ICT systems
  • The candidate should be mature, self-driven and ready to work under pressure.

An attractive remuneration package shall be paid in accordance with the University Terms and Conditions of Service.
