On Saturday, 3rd May 2025, the world was deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Mr. Rajiv Ruparelia—a visionary leader, philanthropist, and influential force in Uganda’s business and education sectors.

At just 35 years old, Rajiv had already made a profound impact on the country’s development through his innovative mindset, dynamic leadership, and steadfast dedication to uplifting others. His passing is not only a heartbreaking loss to his family and friends but also a significant blow to the thousands of lives he touched through his work in education, hospitality, real estate, and corporate leadership. Uganda mourns a pioneer whose legacy will live on through the institutions he led and the dreams he helped others achieve.

CHAMPION FOR EDUCATION

Throughout his life, Rajiv Ruparelia consistently championed education as the guiding light—or “true north”—of both personal and national development. He firmly believed that no one should be denied the opportunity to learn due to financial constraints. This belief was not merely a sentiment but a principle he actively upheld through numerous philanthropic and institutional initiatives.

One of the most notable examples of his commitment was his support for underprivileged but talented children, such as Fresh Kid and Felista—young Ugandan musicians whose education he personally sponsored. Recognizing their potential beyond entertainment, Rajiv ensured they were enrolled in top-tier schools, granting them access to quality education and a stable future.

His passion for accessible education was also evident in his transformative work at Victoria University, where he served as a dedicated council member. Under his leadership, the university adopted innovative learning models, expanded scholarship programs, and worked deliberately to create an inclusive, globally competitive academic environment. His influence helped reposition Victoria University as a leading institution in higher education, attracting students from across Africa and beyond.

At the vigil, Prof. Lawrence Muganga, Vice Chancellor of Victoria University, paid heartfelt tribute to Rajiv, describing him as a kind, innovative, and visionary leader whose impact on Uganda’s education system was transformative. He emphasized that Rajiv’s forward-thinking approach had redefined educational standards, leaving a legacy that will continue to shape generations.

“This country has lost a remarkable man—so visionary in how he saw the world and the lives he touched. The educational systems he helped put in place will continue to transform countless lives. Rajiv will always be remembered through every student who benefits from the kind of education he championed,” he said.

Beyond Victoria University, Rajiv led strategic investments in a diverse portfolio of educational institutions, including Kampala Parents’ School, Kampala International School Uganda, and Delhi Public School International. These institutions serve thousands of learners representing over 30 nationalities, reflecting his unwavering commitment to inclusive, world-class education.

Rajiv's philosophy was simple yet profound: education is a right, not a privilege. Through his efforts, he broke down financial and systemic barriers, empowering thousands of young Ugandans to pursue their dreams. His legacy in the education sector is a testament to the power of visionary leadership rooted in compassion.

A STRATEGIC LEADER

Rajiv’s proactive approach and exceptional professional judgment enabled him to lead decisive strategies that propelled the Ruparelia Group toward sustained growth and innovation. As a scion of the Group, his leadership extended beyond conventional boundaries—blending financial acumen with marketing insight to enhance the Group’s market position and operational effectiveness.

His leadership was marked by an unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation, positioning the Ruparelia Group as a beacon of success on the global business stage.

GONE TOO SOON

Rajiv’s passing leaves a profound void—not only in the hearts of his family but across Uganda’s education sector and wider business community. As a driving force behind Victoria University’s rise and a mentor to countless young professionals, his visionary leadership and commitment to excellence transformed institutions and inspired innovation at every turn.

Today, as the nation mourns the loss of this extraordinary leader, Victoria University joins all Ugandans in offering heartfelt prayers for his loved ones, wishing them strength and solace in this difficult time.

May his legacy endure. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
