Entrance Requirements

Ugandan Students:

Applicants for the above stated post-diploma upgrading degree program will have to meet the following entrance requirements:

  1. At least a minimum of 5 passes including English and Mathematics at O’ level.

  2. Should have a diploma in midwifery from a recognised training institution.

  3. Provide proof of current registration with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC).

  4. A certified copy of official transcripts from an approved school of nursing and midwifery.

  5. Pass an entrance exam with at least 50%.

  6. Pass an entrance interview to verify clinical competencies.

  7. Working experience of at least 2 years in a recognized health care setting.

Pre-requisite entry requirements (International Students):

  1. At least a minimum of 5 passes at O'level including mathematics and English and at least two principle passes at A'level in Biology and Chemistry or an equivalent qualification (secured at the same sitting).

  2. A certified copy of official transcripts from an recognized training institution which have been equated by UNEB OR NCHE.

  3. Pass an entrance exam with at least 50%.

  4. Proof Working experience of at least 2 years in a recognized health care setting.

  5. Proof of current registration with a regulatory body in their home country and will be verified with UNMC.

  6. Must satisfy both the English Language requirements and the academic requirements.

Additional Requirements and Considerations

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate a proficiency in the English language by passing an English proficiency Test conducted by the University.

What you will Learn

Our programme is designed to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills required to excel in the field of midwifery.

As a student of this programme, you will learn and develop competencies in line with the International Confederation of Midwives’ (ICM) standards. Upon graduation, you will have the ability to apply midwifery knowledge, change management, scientific research, teaching and learning, leadership and management, clinical practice, role function, and professionalism.

Our BMS programme is centered on the principles of evidence-based practice, clinical reasoning, and critical thinking. You will learn to analyze, synthesize, and apply selected theories with a broad base of knowledge from basic sciences and clinical placements to support midwifery practice. You will also be able to identify problems related to clinical research and apply findings in order to inform the evolution of evidence-based practice.

Our programme also emphasizes the need to participate in the change process of health care systems across different sectors of populations and diverse people groups. You will learn how to conduct Nutrition seminars and intervention projects, assess healthcare systems, and apply the knowledge of leadership and management.

We believe that teaching and learning play a significant role in promoting health and preventing illness among diverse populations. Therefore, our programme will equip you with advanced concepts of teaching and learning in general practice. You will also learn how to provide continuity of healthcare delivery and how to carry out the appropriate Nursing Process in midwifery assessment, diagnosis, and Nutrition Monitoring and evaluation in the context of health care delivery.

Our programme is also designed to help you understand the scope of practice of a registered midwife, in accordance with currently recognized practice standards in Uganda and globally. You will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to accountability to self, Life-Long Learning (LLL) practices, continuing competency, the welfare of health care consumers, and professional standards. You will also learn to appreciate ethical, legal, and professional accountability for midwifery practice.

Career Opportunities
