Criteria for Admission and Selection Procedure

The program is open to Ugandans and Non-Ugandans who fulfil the admission requirements. The requirements described below are only the minimum academic conditions for admission and only make one eligible for consideration. A candidate is eligible for admission if he/she possesses any of the following:

Advanced Level Certificate:

 

In order to be eligible for admission, a candidate must have sat and passed:

a) Uganda Certificate of Education with credits in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry in same sitting or their equivalent.

b) Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education examination or its equivalent and obtained a principal pass in Biology and a principal pass in Chemistry or its equivalent. Otherwise, he/she must have passed Higher Certificate of Education in Biology and Chemistry to make up for U.A.C.E results.

Holders of Other Qualifications

a) Candidates with International school leaving certificate qualifications below A’ level standard may be required to take and pass the International Foundation Year or equivalent programme such as a Higher Education Certificate in Biological Sciences with at least a credit in Biology and chemistry. in order to qualify for entry to the BNS degree programme. This is likely to apply to students who have followed a 12-year school system (See: Appendix C)

b) In order to be eligible for enrolment in the BNS program, students must satisfy both the English Language requirements and the academic requirements.

Holders of School Certificates Graded in Percentages and Average Points

a) In order to be eligible for admission, a candidate whose final high school marks are graded in percentages and average point systems such as in Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi must have their grades first equated by Uganda National Examinations Board, before seeking admission.

b) In order to be eligible for admission, a candidate must have sat and passed the high school leaving examinations and obtained at least 65% or Credit 4 in the following Science subjects or their equivalents: Biology and Chemistry or its equivalent.

Bachelor’s Degrees in Sciences:

In order to be eligible for admission, a candidate must have obtained a first degree at the level of at least second-class lower division or its equivalent from a recognized institution of higher learning. The successful candidate shall undertake the course on full time basis for a period of four years.

Diploma in Nursing and Clinical health related discipline:

a) Be a holder of a diploma or its equivalent from a recognized health and educational Training Institution in Nursing, Midwifery, Clinical Psychiatry, Public health, Pediatrics, Pharmacy, or other Allied Health Professional courses and registered with a recognized relevant professional body.

b) Diploma holders should have had an overall of a credit pass in their diploma. All diploma applications will be scrutinized by the Faculty Health Sciences on an individual basis.

c) Holders of Diplomas in Nursing from accredited institutions in Uganda will be eligible to apply for credit exemptions based upon the nature, level and period of the programme studied.

 

 

 

 

Additional Requirements and Considerations

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate a proficiency in the English language by passing an English proficiency Test conducted by the University.

Upon the completion of the BNS programme, graduates will have demonstrated the following competencies:

 

  1. Knowledge: The ability to comprehend, analyze, synthesize and apply selected nursing theories with a broad base of knowledge from basic sciences and clinical placements to support general nursing practice.

  2. Critical thinking: Use critical thinking to provide holistic nursing care across the lifespan in a variety of complex healthcare settings utilizing the nursing process to promote health, prevent diseases and maintain well-being for individuals, families, groups, communities and populations.

  3. Ethical Consideration: Accept responsibility and accountability for professional nursing practice including the inherent values of ethics, altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice.

  4. Change Management: An understanding of the need to participate in the change process of health care systems across different sectors of populations and diverse people groups.

  5. Scientific Research: The ability to identify problems related to clinical research and to apply findings in order to inform the evolution of evidenced-based practice in the discipline of nursing.

  6. Teaching and Learning: The knowledge and understanding needed to identify and apply basic concepts of teaching and learning in general nursing practice and in the promotion of health and prevention of illness amongst diverse populations.

  7. Leadership and Management: The knowledge and ability to use basic concepts of leadership and management, including knowledge of internal and external organizational influences on nursing practice in order to provide continuity of healthcare delivery.

  8. Clinical Practice: A working knowledge and the skill of effective clinical judgment  required for assessment, determining nursing differentials, planning, implementing, and evaluation in the context of nursing care delivery.

  9. Role Function: The knowledge and understanding of a registered nurse’s scope of practice, in accordance with currently recognized practice standards in Uganda and East Africa.

  10. Professionalism: A commitment to accountability to self, lifelong (LLL) learning practices, continuing competency, the welfare of health care consumers, and professional standards.  Also, to be able to demonstrate an appreciation for ethical, legal, and professional accountability for generalist nursing practice.

  1. Registered Nurse (RN): Registered nurses work in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and community health centers. They provide patient care, administer medications, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to develop treatment plans.

  2. Nurse Educator: Nurse educators work in academic settings, such as nursing schools or universities, where they teach and mentor nursing students.

  3. Nurse Researcher: Nurse researchers conduct research studies to improve healthcare outcomes for patients. They may work in academic or healthcare settings.

  7. Hospice or Palliative Care Nurse: Hospice or palliative care nurses provide end-of-life care to patients and their families. They work in hospices, hospitals, or in the community.

  8. Nurse Informaticist: Nurse informaticists use technology and data to improve patient care and healthcare systems. They work in hospitals, clinics, or in the technology industry.
